Worst holiday food? [reply]

Hi, queer! It’s the last newsletter of 2023 and you are not ready for the queer highlight to finish off the year. Anyway, Game Night update, opportunities reminders, addressing queer survival over the holidays, and interesting queer gems for the break below!

This Week

Join us tomorrow (12/13) for our traditional Game Night w/ oSTEM (feat. VR, chameleon, sus people, etc.)! We will be in Douglass 401 (different room) from 3-6 pm, drop in for just a game or stay for its entirety. Hope to see you there!!

- Graduate Applications Program: Applications due February 1, 2023
Applying to graduate schools typically costs many hundreds of dollars which poses a major barrier to queer students, who are disproportionately affected by economic hardship. The oSTEM Graduate School Application Program alleviates this burden and connects you with senior queer scientists for application feedback. Read more about the programs here and apply for financial aid here and/or for grad app review here
- Going Home As Queer People: SUNY Tips
Like we’ve mentioned before, holiday breaks can be especially difficult for queer students where going back means confining parts of you for survival. Linked above is a short SUNY article with self-care tips adapted from a Trevor Project blog, while they list some crisis hotlines, we have a page that offers details about possible non-consensual active rescue policies for each (per the TFP).
Know you are loved and cared for by UR peers and by our lil oSTEM community. <3
- Website
Browse through our CCC website to take advantage of our compiled Resources & Opportunities (scholarships, conferences, etc.), read more about our iconic E-Board, and find other general oSTEM links. The website is regularly updated, if you spot any issues or know of an R&O we haven’t included, our Feedback Form is always open!

- Transgender First Scholarship: Applications due by December 31, 2023
TFS’s annual $2.5k scholarship is open to trans/non-binary+ college students of all majors. The application is relatively short, but it does ask for a blog/social media post (300-1000 words) on your experiences.

In The News

• Newly-Discovered TGForum CD Archived: Them Article
Transgenderforum.com, one of the earliest online spaces for/by trans people, recently had its early years archived after an officially produced CD-ROM was discovered. I’m not entirely sure what the connection between a website and a CD is, or if it’s just the 90s equivalent to merch, but the point is that this archival work helps combat the historic erasure of trans culture and existence in general. The switch from print media to online forums captured through the CD shows the potential for community building and political organizing identified by the trans pioneers who built up the website from scratch. It’s amazingly easy to fall into wormholes exploring its content, but I should note that some of the language is of course dated and because of the early internet’s limited accessibility, it is predominantly populated by white, middle-class, Boomer trans women.
• GLBT’s Digital Collections Archive
The GLBT Historical Society’s Online Resources website makes queer archives accessible online, showing LGBTQ+ history and culture through exhibits, articles, interviews, etc. Their Online Exhibits page digitizes incredible, diverse collections that could fill that insatiable hunger for queer gems over the break!

Queer Highlight?

Apparently, Katie felt you all are not yet ready for her highlight so she will be sharing it next semester after Leila.

See you tomorrow!
