Queers Read This!

When is ur birthday? [reply]

Hi, twink! It is week 6 and I am in the trenches. Anyways, GMM reminders, an oSTEM roundtable collab, and Katy’s queer news below.

Last, Last Week

As a reminder, because Meliora Weekend is this weekend, we’ve moved our GMM to next week on October 13!! Going forward, our GMMs will be bi-weekly based on that GMM, so the ones after will be on October 27, November 10, etc. The change not only helps accommodate for all of E-Board being away for the O4U Engineering Conference, but it also aligns our next GMM with two slay birthdays!!
Along with sharing your successes and honors (especially those you found through our newsletters, which we hear is a common occurrence), we’d love to give you even just a little shout out around your birthday! Feel free to share your birthday with us through the poll above! :)

- oSTEM Conference
Thank you to everyone who submitted a Conference Interest form, we had a lot of great members to sort through. It was a difficult job and we wish we could take everyone, but we have reached out to everyone selected by now. <3

- WiC-MiC x oSTEM Roundtable: Next Monday, October 9, 2023
Our friends at the university’s Women and Minorities in Computing student org invited us to be a part of their roundtable discussion, Experiences of Being a Minority in STEM, next Monday, October 19 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm in 1201 Wegmans Hall. The Society of Women in Astronomy & Physics (SWAP) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) are also collaborating in this safe space to connect STEM students with shared lived experiences and offer support and resources. Snacks will be provided (aka pizza, our entire E-Board, and hopefully you)!
- Website
Browse through our CCC website to take advantage of our compiled Resources & Opportunities (scholarships, conferences, etc.), read more about our iconic E-Board, and find other general oSTEM links. The website is regularly updated, if you spot any issues or know of an R&O we haven’t included, our Feedback Form is always open!

Their Business Conference is tentatively scheduled on March 8-10, 2024 in NYC, read more here. Round 2 is your last chance to apply and get access to the amazing experiences and resources that O4U conferences have to offer.

In The News: Katy's Week

Hello Everyone! Below you will find some news updates. As always if you have any suggestions of things for us to cover, feel free to fill out this Google form!

• Meet the Gay Man Elected to Lead Greece’s Leftist Party in Historic First: Advocate
Just over a week ago, Stefanos Kasselakis was elected to lead the Greek Leftist party. He is the first out political leader ever in Greece, and is hoping to reform many of Greece’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws if elected. Since marriage equality is not recognized in Greece, Kasselakis married his husband in the US. If elected Prime Minister, Kasselakis would make Greek history and expand LGBTQ+ international leadership.
• In Boston, A Group is moving to create a New LGBT Museum: nbcBoston
Some of you may know, I am from the Boston area, so here is some exciting news from my neck of the woods! Just last week a local organizer group announced they are planning to open The Boston LGBTQ Museum of Art, History and Culture, which will support local Queer artists. The Museum is set to have its first exhibition this spring.

Highlight Interlude

“Esos movimientos de rebeldia que tenemos en la sangre nosotros los mexicanos surgen como rios desbocanados en mis venas. Y como mi raza que cada en cuando deja caer esa esclavitud de obedecer, de callarse y aceptar, en mi esta la rebeldia encimita de mi carne. Debajo de mi humillada mirada esta una cara insolente lista para explotar. Me costo muy caro mi rebeldia-acalambrada con desvelos y dudas, sintiendome inutil, estupida, e impotente.”
- Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa, La Frontera: The New Mestiza

The queer highlight today is a semi-continued ‘highlight’ on Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa’s La Frontera: The New Mestiza. I’ll leave you with Anzaldúa’s quote above with the hope that you (know Spanish and) overlook the lack of a highlight this week! :D

Enjoy Mel weekend!
