Did you miss us? [reply]

Hi, *I’m running out of queer greetings*! It is your lovely CEO, CFO, mother, leader, queen, and president Ellie coming into your email inbox to spread a little queer joy! Our little miss email writer Kevin is in their death era (physically, mentally, & emotionally) so I will be taking over this week’s newsletter! As you all know, oSTEM UR spent this past weekend in sunny Anaheim, California for the 13th annual oSTEM conference! We had such an amazing time, and brought back so much information to share with you all (and potentially lined up a spring speaker)! As finals draw closer, with today marking exactly 4 weeks to the end of classes, we remind you to take advantage of our oSTEM Study Hours in the BIC on Mondays from 1-3 pm! Remember that grades do not define you, you are just as worthy to be here as anyone else, and there is no “perfect” path!! Much love to you all!

In The News

• Texas School District Reinstates Trans Lead in “Oklahoma!”: NBC Article
Sherman High School in Texas has gained a lot of media attention over the past week for their decision to remove high school senior, Max Hightower, from their lead role in the school’s production of “Oklahoma!”. Max, a trans-man, was barred from the lead role because his “assigned sex at birth did not match that of the character”. The school then planned to force the theater department to cancel the performance of “Oklahoma!” entirely and replace it with a junior version suited for kids under 14, which would have cut Max’s solo entirely. On Monday, the community came out in droves to support Max at the district board meeting and to “let the students sing!” After the public hearings, the board voted 7-0 to reinstate Max in their role and allow the full performance of the play. In light of recent anti-queer and anti-trans legislation, this was a heart-warming reminder that when our community stands together, we can fight against oppression, and stand up against injustice.
• Transgender Awareness Week: Advocate
This Monday began National Transgender Awareness Week. As such, you are legally obligated to give your trans/non-binary/gender non-conforming friends extra attention this week. According to Kevin, attention can also be substituted for cold hard cash. In all seriousness, this week it is very important to highlight and platform the work of amazing transgender activists past and present. I encourage you to take this week to reflect on your community, and how trans individuals are represented, misrepresented, or excluded entirely. How can we as a community better support and uplift our trans siblings? How can we fight back in the face of bigoted legislation across the country? How can we build a better world for ourselves and those who come after us?
