Queers Read This!

Greetings halloweenies! Happy spooky season, Halloween is right around the corner, and I hope you all had an incredible Halloweekend (and a fun halloweekend 2.0 this week???? Idk the dates are making it so confusing this year). Anyways, we have a spooky GMM coming up this week plus more!!

This Week

We will have a General Member Meeting (GMM) this week on Wednesday, October 30th from 7-9 pm in Wilco 122 (I know it’s a location change again). Since it’s Hallow-eve, we’re having a spooky hang out with halloween-themed treats and a queer horror movie!! If you have any Halloween costumes as well, please wear them!! We can’t wait, it’ll be so much fun so please stop by!!

- O4U Business Conference: Round 2 Applications due by October 28, 2024

Out for Undergrad’s (O4U) conferences are life-changing experiences for LGBTQ2+ undergrads (whether you are out, selectively out, or it’s complicated). Their all-expenses-paid conferences feature prominent queer speakers, mentorship discussions, legendary career fairs, and more! Their Business Conference is tentatively scheduled for March 2025 in NYC, read more here.

- Point Foundation Scholarship: Applications due by December 5, 2024

The Point Foundation Flagship Scholarship empowers LGBTQ students who are earning their undergraduate, graduate, & doctoral degrees at accredited colleges in the United States by offering financial support, community resources, and professional development. Flagship Scholarship recipients receive financial support, access to multiple leadership development programs, mentorship or coaching, and the support of a community of scholars and alumni.

- Transgender First Scholarship: Applications due by December 31, 2024

TFS’s annual $2.5k scholarship is open to trans/non-binary+ college students of all majors. The application is relatively short, but it does ask for a blog/social media post (300-1000 words) on your experiences. Feel free to contact us for blog post guidance if you’d like to go that route.

Call to Action: Election Day & Voting

“The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope. Hope for a better world, hope for a better tomorrow, hope for a better place to come to if the pressures at home are too great. Hope that all will be all right.”
- Harvey Milk

In lieu of a traditional queer highlight this month, I wanted to make this quick PSA because election day is next Tuesday, November 5th. Although it’s easy to joke about politics and the state of our country, the truth is that we’re in a very pivotal moment in history, and this election, more than ever, will be a test of our strength and resilience. The rights of all LBGTQ+ identifying individuals, as well as many other minority groups are ever present on the ballot this year, and although it may not seem like it, our votes do matter and is one step in a large wave of action to amplify our voices and raise awareness to issues ever present in and out of our community. We as UofR students are privileged to live in an area and have a school that is supportive of diversity and inclusion, and strives to support safe spaces for students. But in many states, that isn’t the case, with LGBTQ+ rights and DEI programs being eliminated across the US. For many of these areas, voting for officials who support these kinds of issues is the biggest way to ensure systemic change and right these wrongs. And oSTEM, in its nature, is a very political organization and will continue to be for a long time. Although I probably won’t directly tell you who to vote for in this upcoming election, I can safely say that you all likely know the answer (or at you know who not to vote for - “hint hint”). Here’s a link to help you all identify how you can vote both in and out of state. Early voting is continuing from now until November 3rd, and election day is on November 5th! So go out there, vote and make your voices heard!

Happy Halloween!! See you on Wednesday!! <3
