From: Out in STEM Date: March 3 Subject: Graduate School GMM 3/26 + oSTEM Spring Drag Competition 3/29
Queers Read This!
Hey queer-ns! Can you believe it’s already March? I can’t, and I don’t want to 😠(I reused this same joke but hey, it’s not plagiarism if you’re copying yourself). Anyways, I’ve been a locked-in machine recently (with a healthy dose of scrolling) but thankfully Spring Break is around the corner and I can’t wait to go back home soon. Oh also, the Oscars happened, I hope you all watched (for the few of you who still do), regardless of what you thought of the outcome (I was personally happy), the true winner that night was Emilia Perez losing (2 out of 13 wins??? And losing International Feature??? That’s gotta blow), so I guess we’re all celebrating.
Oh, I’m also happy to announce that I’m newly single and on the market….for a new internship! Yeah, NIH got gutted so bad that I can’t come back this summer, and it’s kind of a shame because I’ve been there for two years, and my dad worked there a lot (but not in research, so I wouldn’t call myself a nepo baby, but I do acknowledge that yeah STEM does run in the family). As a leading research institution that I hoped to one day call my future home, it feels kind of like a bittersweet goodbye to an institution that I once held in deep regard and inspired me to push forward in my path towards science & medicine. And as the professors in the faculty panel last week reflected, we’re not alone in this battle. But as they valiantly brought up, in spite of these challenges we have to keep moving forward, doing our work, and continuing to express ourselves, and no signed piece of paper can tell us we can’t. So to those of you who have parents or family members working in STEM or even your PIs, postdocs, lab scientists, etc, thank them for the hard work that they do because it’s important. And for those of you (well probably the majority of y’all cuz this is Out in STEM), remember to always be yourself and keep pushing forward, because we are the future and can be the ones to inspire change.
Anyways, since Spring Break is coming soon, we won’t be meeting for a while. But our next GMM is really awesome, and we have an incredible Spring event coming soon as well that you won’t want to miss!
Last Week + Coming Soon
Thank you to everyone who showed up for the Faculty Panel last week! It was really inspiring hearing the experiences & advice from the five faculty members, and as mentioned before, these issues have never been more relevant than now.
Because of Spring Break, we will not have our next GMM until March 26th, so thankfully you get a bit of a break from us! That day, at our normal time from 7-8pm (room TBD - we might be changing??), we will be hosting a Graduate School applications session! For anyone who is interested in applying to graduate school, this applies to you, so definitely make sure to come!!
We are also excited to announce our big Spring event for the semester. Although we unfortunately could not do the speaker show again this year due to budget cuts, we have now pivoted to a brand new event; a drag competition, hosted by some wonderful E-board members & special guests on Saturday March 29th, 5-7pm in the Gowen Room!! Come dressed up in your iconic fits & unleash your inner drag persona! Or cheer on your friends and other participants! There are some really cool prizes we’ll be offering up too (including individual awards & gift cards too!!). If you’re interested in participating, please fill out the following form (Link). We hope to see you there!
