Queers Read This!

      Hey besties! The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, but it’s still freezing cold and windy outside because that’s Rochester, NY for ya! I’ll keep this brief because I’m very busy this week (yeah it’s gonna be like that for a little while). But hey, this week is oSTEM week because we’ll be everywhere; not one, not two but THREE events this week to look forward to (please excuse the bad formatting at the bottom - CCC was being mean today 😢)!

This Week


     First, we will have our next GMM on March 26th from 7-8pm in Douglass 401, where we will be hosting a Graduate School applications session, featuring our friends from the Greene Center and OutGrads! For anyone who is interested in applying to graduate school, this applies to you, so definitely make sure to come!!

     Next, our drag competition will be held on Saturday March 29th, 5-7pm in the Gowen Room!! Come dressed up in your iconic fits & unleash your inner drag persona! Or cheer on your friends and other participants! There are some really cool prizes we’ll be offering up too (including individual awards & gift cards too!!). If you’re interested in participating (and yes you absolutely should), please fill out the following form (Link). We hope to see you there!

     Finally, the day afterwards, on Sunday, March 30th, from 6–8pm in Douglass 403 (we may or may not have hijacked study hours), we will hold a brief overview and application session on the Out 4 Undergrad conferences! These conferences are all-expenses-paid (so literally you get a free trip out of school), and feature prominent queer speakers, mentorship discussions, legendary career fairs, and more! oSTEM members have historically had a presence at O4U and we hope to be there again next semester! Round 1 applications are due on March 31st - the day afterwards (Link) so if you want to increase your chances of acceptance, make sure to apply by then!

The website is regularly updated, if you spot any issues or know of an R&O we haven’t included, our Feedback Form is always open!

University

- Astronaut Scholarship: Nominations Due March 31, 2025 (Link)

     The Astronaut Scholarship, founded in 1984 by the Mercury 7 astronauts, is open to exceptional rising juniors and seniors pursuing STEM degrees and has an award value of up to $15,000 per school year. In addition to the monetary value of the scholarship, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation connects current Astronaut Scholars and Astronaut Scholar alum with mentorship and networking opportunities that go far beyond your average scholarship. Many Astronaut Scholars are offered internships and jobs in their disciplines due to the connections made by ASF. Some go on to grad school and some have even started their own businesses! - LGBTQ+ Leadership Lecture & Dinner: Register by April 17, 2024

​​​​​​​     The BIC is hosting its iconic LGBTQ+ Leadership Lecture & Dinner on Thursday, April 24th at 6pm in the Feldman Ballroom and will be featuring Aaron C. Morris, a renowned LGBTQ activist and Executive Director of Immigration Equality. Registration is required and due by April 17th (so you still have time), and they will be serving free dinner from Salena’s Mexican Restaurant! If you’ve attended before, you’ll know the food is good and the speakers are inspiring and very insightful! Our previous eBoard has also had a history of helping to plan the event and we were known to have one of the highest turnouts of any student organization at the dinner, so we hope to continue that trend this semester!
