Queers Read This!

Hey there gaymers and girlies! It’s Chateau Diane, aka you’re newly labeled super gay drag queen, courtesy of the incredible Thorgy Thor. In all seriousness, Thursday night’s performance was absolutely insane, honestly my drag queen aura has gone crazy this school year. It was so crazy it makes you wanna change your pronouns again; yeah I’m joining the any pronouns club but I’ll still stick to what I have currently in different situations (hmm, I’m getting inspiration for a future queer highlight down the road).
But enough about me, I hope you all enjoyed your Valentine’s Day, whether you’re single, happily in a relationship, or you’re just having a good time with your besties. Personally, I think what makes queer love special is the way it thrives on the idea of breaking boundaries and embracing non-conformity to cis-heteronormative structures, and in these trying times, I hope we can remember the love we have for each other, no matter what form that takes.

Last Week + Next Week

Pop the Balloon certainly “popped off” last week (sorry for the pun); we hope you had fun either participating or watching the drama unfold in real time. We also hope you enjoyed the pizza courtesy of my other club Eye to Eye (which y’all should consider volunteering for - sorry for the shameless plug).

Next week, at our GMM on February 26th, from 7-8pm in the Gowen Room, we have a very special event: our Spring Faculty Panel! We have an exciting lineup of five queer professors & faculty at the University of Rochester who have agreed to share their story & experiences of being LGBTQ+ identifying individuals while also working in academia and at the University. Our guest speakers for this year are:

  • Dr. Michael Clark, PhD (he/him), Associate Professor of Instruction, Biology
  • Dr. Charles Kamen, MPH, PhD(he/him), Associate Professor, Division of Supportive Care in Cancer, Department of Surgery & Associate Director, Community Outreach and Engagement, Wilmot Cancer Institute
  • Dr. Kale Weichman, MS, PhD (they/them), Staff Scientist & Instructor, Laboratory of Laser Energetics
  • Dr. Coraline Rinn Iordan, PhD (she/her), Assistant Professor, Brain & Cognitive Sciences & Neuroscience
  • Dr. Marie-Joelle Estrada, PhD (she/her), Associate Professor, Psychology

We’re really looking forward to the panel and hope it can serve as an insightful experience to learn more about navigating academia and STEM as a queer person.
