The purpose of Japanese Students' Association is to give a place in the University of Rochester student body where expression of Japanese culture and language can be used and flourish. Non-speakers and speakers alike can all find a niche in this group and enjoy what it has to offer. JSA will incorporate other smaller divisions that will enhance the whole cultural experience, including art, calligraphy, pop- culture, and exotic foods.
Throughout the semester we hold weekly meetings where we introduce various aspects of Japan ranging from Japanese Language, culture, traditional toys / games, Literature, and many other aspects! We also hold cooking sessions where members can cook and learn how to make Japanese dishes themselves!
In JSA, in every weekly meeting, we introduce new aspects of Japanese culture ranging from its language, food, writing, literature, media, and many other things
Preivously, we have had various activities such as Origami workshop, tea ceremony workshop, Traditional Toys / Board game session, Hanetsuki (Traditional Tennis), and Water yoyo session!
We believe that food is one of the most important part of a country's culture, every semester, we hold cooking sessions so that people have the opportunity to taste Japanese food themselves!
Moreover, we provide recipes to the members so that we can cook the dishes together from start to end! Not only you get to taste these dishes but also cook it yourself!
One of our major Annual Event is "Omatsuri" which means "Festival" in Japanese. In the fall semester, we set up various activity booth in Hirst Language where people can experience Japanese culture.
Our Activities include: Caligraphy, Water-yoyo, Traditional Toy station, Chopstick Challenge, Kimono photo booths and many other things!
