ISSA Newsletter (November – December 2023)

Dear ISSA members,

Happy New Year to you all! We hope your year is off to a great start. Here are some updates on our recent activities over the past few months:

1. Responses from Tax Survey:

We've compiled a summary of the responses from our tax survey, showcasing the diverse experiences and challenges with UofR tax resources. The feedback on Sprintax and ISO tax webinars is mixed, with common suggestions emphasizing the need for more comprehensive information on international student tax responsibilities.

If students were to meet with an ISO tax expert, the questions would cover various topics, highlighting the necessity for clear guidance and better communication on tax-related matters. Students express a desire for dedicated tax preparers, expert guidance, clear procedures, one-on-one sessions, tutorials, increased awareness, support infrastructure, educational resources, expert assistance during filing, and a revival of previous services.

The full summary can be found here.

2. CPA Availability for Tax-related Queries for International Students:

Starting January 26th, a CPA will be available four hours weekly to address student questions on taxes. Inquiries must be submitted via email, and the CPA will respond through email and follow up in person as needed. While this service is free to students, those opting to have their taxes filed by the CPA will incur that cost. Non-resident aliens are encouraged to direct their questions to the Sprintax team. The collaborative effort involves AS&E GEPA and SMD, focusing on schools with the highest need. Information on tax filing will be disseminated through social media, the ISO newsletter, and regular Tax Town Halls. Payroll is actively involved in guiding students on when to contact ISO versus Payroll and explaining the difference between Sprintax Calculus and Sprintax filing. The objective is to preserve the CPA's time for resident alien support and more complex questions.

3. Reclassification fact-checking for international students:

We inquired with ISO regarding the consequences of reclassification for international students to employees. According to their response, the reclassification and transition to W-2 status for F1/J1 international students do not affect their immigration status, as it falls under the category of on-campus employment. In the event of a successful reclassification, students gain the opportunity to apply for Social Security Numbers (SSNs) earlier, eliminating the necessity for supplementary employment beyond the specified W2 classified work. It is important to note that there are no legal or immigration concerns linked to the reclassification process. Further details on the reclassification efforts can be found here: (GSC Email - Update from Tax Expert)
