Our Spring 2022 program is Performance Through Cinema, a three-day series that explores different iterations of performance as a conceptual paradigm in cinema. It features works by Peggy Ahwesh, Catalina Segu Jensen, Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, Meredith Monk, Basma Alsharif, Thirza Cuthand, Standish Lawder, Harun Farocki, and Naomi Uman. The first screening, “Body/Place/Performance,” underscores how performing bodies create imaginary geographies and activate histories of place. The second screening expands on these explorations of performance with a program titled “Performance/Anti-performance,” which features three works that test the limits of what constitutes performance. Our final screening, “Performing Mediums,” presents filmmakers figuring the mediums of film, TikTok, and video games as performing entities in themselves. Together, the three screenings inquire into the complex relationship between cinema and performance and the possibility of cinema to critique various kinds of performance.
We intend our program to accommodate a range of people with interests in performance and media practices, including students and faculty in Dance and Movement, the International Theatre Program, Film and Media Studies, Digital Media Studies, Art History, Studio Art, English, Anthropology, Modern Languages and Cultures, the Frederick Douglass Institute, and Visual and Cultural Studies, as well as artists, filmmakers, and other interested groups from the Rochester community. We will provide light refreshments in line with current University Covid regulations. We hope the events will remedy the social isolation felt by many at present by generating connections among people with shared interests.
