Hello Partners in Reading!
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us tonight for our Spring General Interest Meeting! We know braving this winter snowstorm isn't comfy and we appreciate you showing out for us tonight! This email contains helpful info necessary for veteran tutors, new folks, absentees and attendees alike, so give it a read! Unfortunately, our remote zoom option was unable to save our recording, so I won't be able to attach a video as promised, but I will include all necessary information, and if you would like to clarify anything, please feel free to shoot me an email, and we can set up a time to talk!

About Us: Partners in Reading is a Community Engagement organization at the University of Rochester under the umbrella of the Community Service Network. We specialize in volunteer tutoring in the Rochester community, emphasizing classroom support, college readiness, and mentor relationships.
How it works: We have four (4) "Projects" (Project Grow, Project Horizons, Project Reach, and Project Care) which all work with students and volunteer tutors to promote our goals and assist in the classroom. Each Project has its own unique partner school, time, etc. to afford tutors flexibiltiy when scheduling their tutoring.
Once matched with a Project, your Project Coordinator will pair you with a classroom at their partner school. There will be 1-2 tutors in each classroom, and tutoring will occur once weekly in 2 hour sessions. Each week you complete tutoring, you can upload your Community Service Hours to CCC to be used in applications, resumes, etc.
- Project Reach --
- Fridays from 10:30am - 12:30pm at School 33.
- Transportation is provided (carpool from Sue B dorm)
- Project Grow --
- Fridays from 12pm - 2pm at School 3.
- Transportation is provided (carpool from Sue B dorm)
- Project Care --

- Self-Transport (accessible by the Gold Line)
- Project Horizons --
- Saturdays from 12pm - 2pm
- On-Campus, no transportation necessary
Time Commitment: Tutors must complete 2 hours of weekly tutoring with their Project. Prospective tutors must also attend the mandatory Pre-Tutoring Training (February 8th at 8pm in Dewey 1-101). Pre-Tutoring Training is considered mandatory excusable, meaning you are required to attend in order to tutor but if you have a valid conflict (class, work, illness, emergency), send me your excuse, and I'll set up a time to get you the necessary information!
Partners in Reading also hosts larger events throughout the semester like our Trivia Fundraiser in the Fall and our College Counts event in the Spring.
College Counts is happening this year on Friday April 15th from 9am to 1pm, and we need members to volunteer for the day! More information will be coming closer to April, but mark your calendars! It's an amazing day and a wonderful opportunity for the kids! We bring the students to campus for a field trip where they will get a tour of campus, lunch at DFO, shows from student orgs, activities and more!
Partners in Reading also hosts occasional GMMs which are optional and for us to bond as a club as well as learn a thing or two! On February 15th, Melissa Rusnica of the Warner Graduate School of Education will be joining us at 6pm to talk about graduate programs and opportunities at Warner!
Getting Involved: We are looking for tutors with passion who love getting involved in making positive change in their community! We ask that all tutors (even if you've been with us before) fill out this Tutoring Application. EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO TUTOR MUST FILL OUT THE APPLICATION!
It's less-so an application and more a way for us to guage your availability to match you to Projects! The Tutoring Application is due this Sunday by 11am as E-Board will be sorting Projects when we meet at that time.
Financial Commitment: We ask for $5 semesterly dues payable at any time. We are also considering t-shirts for our College Counts event which would come at a pro-rated cost of about $10-15 depending on interest and sourcing.
HOWEVER, Partners in Reading has a goal of no financial burden! We want passionate people to tutor with and would never want to lose someone with a drive to join our organization because they couldn't afford to join. If dues or t-shirts are of concern to you, please do not hesitate to reach out to Heidi Budd (President) or Kaitlyn Bartlett (Business Manager) with any concerns, and we will work something out with you!
