Come Learn about the work at the fringes of Number Theory with Professor John Doyle. Talk is accessible to all and pizza will be provided.
Abstract: For roughly a century, mathematicians have been studying the iteration of polynomial functions by using techniques from complex analysis. More recently, it was observed that tools from algebra and number theory could be useful for approaching the same questions from a completely different perspective. In this talk, I'll give an introduction to polynomial dynamics -- mostly focusing on the case of quadratic polynomials, where the Mandelbrot set plays a key role -- and describe some simple-to-state, yet still unsolved, problems in the area.
