It's Time!!!
As-Salamu 'Alaykum my beautiful people! YES, you read that right! It's time for the โBIGGESTโ event hosted by the UofR MSA annually: our beloved FAST-A-THON. For those that are new, Fast-A-Thon is a MSA tradition that is annually hosted every Ramadan, Alhamdullillah. This year would be a little bit more special to those that celebrate Ramadan because Fast-A-Thon, which was previously held many times during mid-Ramadan, will be hosted right at the beginning of the holy month. We sincerely hope that Fast-A-Thon inspires you to begin this Ramadan with strength and sincere niyyah (spiritual intention).
The purpose of this event is:
- To create an inclusive and interfaith environment
- To spiritually reflect on our journey as mulims and our devotion to Allah S.W.T.
Every year, we select a specific topic to reflect upon. For this year's topic, it will be the Spiritual Journey towards the Divine, based off of the Qur'an Ayah (81:26):
ููุฃููููู ุชูุฐูููุจูููู
"So what หนotherหบ path would you take?"
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
Whether we identify as muslims or not, each of us have an individual, unique spiritual journey. So, take a moment to come and celebrate that uniqueness with us on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 at 5 pm, in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons.
This is an interfaith event and everyone, regardless of creed, are invited.
For this year, our speaker will be Mark Cass, In'Sha'Allah. He has been the executive director of the North Side Learning Center (NSLC), which was founded in 2009 and exists to aid in adult and youth literacy development, and to be instrumental in teaching self-sufficiency and self-actualization to newcomers in our community. He has engaged in a wide variety of social justice initiatives throughout his life. Interfaith relationships and activities have been an important facet of his work throughout his life. He is an active member of the Masjid 'Eesa ibn Maryam (aka Mosque of Jesus, Son of Mary) and has taken his shahada in 2020, Subhan'Allah.
We encourage that everyone fasts that day collectively to share a similar experience between the muslims and their non-muslim peers and to enjoy the breaking of a fast together as a community.
Tickets are available in the common market, as well as through this link. Get it ASAP before they run out! Y'all know the drill: No ticket - no entry (so sad).
Dress formal or ethnic (highly encouraged). See you there, In'Sha'Allah!
