We will explore the unique barriers Deaf individuals face within healthcare from both the patient and provider perspectives. Dr. Carolyn Stern will discuss how communication access, interpreter availability, provider bias, and limited health information in ASL can impact Deaf patients’ safety, understanding, and overall quality of care. She will also highlight the challenges Deaf doctors experience in medical training and clinical settings, including accessibility in fast-paced environments, systemic assumptions about capability, and navigating teamwork and patient communication, while emphasizing strategies for creating more equitable, culturally responsive healthcare for the Deaf community.
