Undergraduate research offers unparalleled opportunities for growth — but believe it or not, there are deliberate strategies that can maximize the benefits. Unlike coursework or typical jobs, research operates by different rules that are rarely taught explicitly. This talk equips you with counterintuitive strategies and practical frameworks to maximize your research experience: accelerating your development as a scientist, increasing your chances of contributing to publications, and building lasting mentor relationships. We'll share a first-principles mindset for navigating research, reveal the unwritten rules that experienced researchers take for granted, and provide actionable advice you can implement immediately. Whether you're considering your first research position or looking to get more from your current one, you'll leave with concrete tools to transform your undergraduate research experience.'

This program is designed to be open to any and all University of Rochester students regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex, and is consistent with all current governing federal and state nondiscrimination law. We recognize the intersectionality of individual identities and recommend that you join any program to explore your career interests, connect to networks, and discover helpful resources.
