About the Film
18-year-old Daphne Patiri, “Patty” to friends and family, is a star judoka on her small Aegean island of Ikaria. Legendary judo sensei Yuri, himself a former national champion, flies Ikaria to watch Patty practice. Yuri sees Olympic potential in Patty and whisks her off to Athens to train at his new dojo. For Patty, moving to Athens is an opportunity to do more than just train. It is also a chance for her to spread her wings and be the person she wants to be. First order of business: shedding the nickname “Patty”. In Athens, she’s Daphne.
Life in Athens is a challenge for Daphne. Yuri is tough as nails and very strict. She’s billetted in the home of a stranger and struggles to connect with the other girls in the dojo, who appear threatened by her potential. Daphne is immediately smitten when she meets Zoe, a national champion who used to train with Yuri and is now part of rival dojo, Kendavros (Centuar). Daphne and Zoe seem to fall in love overnight and suddenly Athens is an exciting, happier place for Daphne. Ultimately however, Daphne’s time in Athens will teach her more than just judo, she’ll also learn how complicated love can be and that people are not always who they seem.
Patty Is Such a Girly Name is a fantastic coming of age drama about first love, in the tradition of so many ImageOut favorites. It’s also a great sports movie, with hints of Karate Kid. It pulls together a loveable newcomer, an eccentric coach, a beautiful new love interest, and a villainous rival dojo. Those elements are perfectly blended and whipped to a thrilling crescendo that leaves both the fictional and real-life audiences cheering for more.
