Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) is starting a “K-Club” - a peer writing support group – for School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) and Arts, Sciences, and Engineering (AS&E) postdocs interested in writing applications for the NIH Career Development K awards.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers mentored research career development awards or K awards. Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) is interested in starting a “K-Club” or a peer writing support group for individuals interested in writing applications for K awards. Explanation of the different types of K awards can be found here:https://researchtraining.nih.gov/programs/career-development.
Additionally, for more information about writing NIH grant applications, check out: Russell SW, Morrison DC. The grant application writer’s workbook. National Institutes of Health Version. Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops. Buellton, CA; 2015.
We invite you to join us June 30, 2021 from noon-1p via zoom for our K-club information session, where we will provide an overview of the K-club structure, decide on a meeting time/day, and review expectations.
Postdoctoral fellows or associates interested in submitting applications for K awards from the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) or Arts, Sciences, and Engineering (AS&E) at the University of Rochester are WELCOME to attend. The majority of the ”K-Club” efforts will focus on development of the research strategy (inclusive of the Specific Aims, Significance, Innovation, and Approach), however some time will be devoted to the other application sections of the different K awards (Candidate Section, Environment and Institutional Commitment to Candidate Section, Budget, Biosketch, etc).
Applicants will have the opportunity to improve their grant writing skills by way of reviewing one another’s application sections. Participants will be partnered with a peer in advance to the respective “K-Club” meetings (it may/may not be the same peer for each meeting). Adhering to the topics to be addressed at each “K-Club” meeting, participants will be expected to complete a draft of the scheduled application section in advance, exchange with their peer partner, and complete their review of each other’s work PRIOR to the “K-Club” meeting. After providing feedback on each other’s work during the meeting, the peer partners will then present and share their findings with the broader “K-Club” group.
If interested in attending the information session, please register at https://urmc.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMpc--srT4uG9P-KGBYR3yq-ztwmmYimfLM. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
The K-club plans to meet bi-monthly beginning the first week of July!
