This workshop is an introduction to community-engaged art, an art genre that includes collaborative projects aimed to amplify voices, generate joy, promote equity, create safe spaces, and/or build sustainable solutions to problems as expressed by community members. The workshop will start with a brief introduction to community-engaged art. We will then make “personal power symbols” as part of a global Arts for Peace project that was piloted in July 2026 with 25 unwed, divorced, and widowed mothers in Casablanca, Morocco. Throughout the workshop, Professor Layton will show how it worked with the Moroccan mothers and provide tips on designing and leading your own workshops. This workshop will serve as a pre-requisite for the course "Artist as Citizen: Building Creative Communities" on campus. No experience in art is necessary. Just bring curiosity!
